Retinal Photography

Retinal photography is a highly effective yet quick and painless way to check your eye health by capturing clear, detailed images of the back of your eye. All you have to do is look into a fundus camera (which looks somewhat like a microscope) and the equipment will be able to capture images of the retina – the tissue lining the back of your eye, as well as the optic nerve and the blood vessels to your eyes.

Once captured, these images are saved electronically to your file and can be reviewed at your subsequent appointments at any of our New South Wales or Queensland clinics, so we can keep track of any changes in your eyes and pick up on any changes long before they start to produce any symptoms or changes in your vision.

Benefits Of Retinal Photography

Our eye care professionals consider retinal photography to be a very important part of assessing your vision and eye health, which is why it is a standard part of our annual eye tests, including those that are bulk billed for those eligible with Medicare. Benefits include:

  • Detecting eye diseases early, before they become symptomatic: this includes conditions like age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, retinal detachment and more, which can help to prevent vision loss.
  • Closely monitoring eye conditions: having regular retinal photographs as part of your annual eye test can help to monitor changes in the retina over time, providing important information for tracking the progression of eye diseases and evaluating the effectiveness of treatments.
  • Optimised diagnosis and treatment: as retinal photography provides a clear, detailed image of the retina that can be used by eye care professionals, your diagnosis and treatment process is optimised to help develop effective and timely treatment plans.
  • Ability to compare to previous images: having the ability to review previous retinal photographs provides valuable information for our eye care professionals when it comes to monitoring the progression of eye diseases and for making informed treatment decisions.

 Book Your Retinal Photography Assessment

While retinal photography is integrated as a standard part of your eye exam with us, it may be of benefit to take repeat photographs if you suddenly notice any vision disturbances, vision loss or other vision-related problems. Here, re-examining your retina can offer valuable insight into what’s going on, so you can get started on the best course of treatment, or be referred to an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) without delay. You may also consider requesting retinal photographs more often if you have diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol, as these increase your risk of eye problems that can be detected at the level of the retina.
